Coeur d'Alene Fire Chief Tom Greif will retire in April, the city of Coeur d'Alene announced Friday.

“Serving the City of Coeur d’Alene for 28 years and Kootenai County for the past 33 years has been the honor of a lifetime," Greif said in a press release. "I’ve been surrounded by some of the most amazing and dedicated professionals that a community could ever wish for ... this community will always be my home, and I’ll forever be proud to have worn the badge here.”

Greif began his career with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department in 1997, steadily rising through the ranks "thanks to his professionalism, extensive experience with the EMS system, and deep commitment to public safety," the city said in a press release.

His promotion to fire chief in 2022 marked a new chapter in his career, during which he has led the department through critical upgrades in equipment, an updated five-year master plan, and strong partnerships with surrounding agencies that continue to benefit the department and the city of Coeur d’Alene, the release said.

Over his career, Greif has supported and lived by the fire department’s mission statement: “The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department is committed to providing the highest quality service to the residents and valued guests of the City of Excellence. We are driven by perfection and steered by knowledge, tradition and integrity.”

Mayor Woody McEvers commended Greif’s leadership.

“On behalf of the City of Coeur d’Alene, I want to express our deepest gratitude to Chief Greif for his many years of dedicated service," McEvers said. "His leadership has strengthened our fire department, enhanced public‐safety in our community, and set a standard of excellence for all of us to follow. As he embarks on this next chapter, we wish him the very best and know he leaves behind a department well‐positioned for continued success.”

Greif earned $179,753 annually.
