Kootenai Health, Regence BlueShield in contract talks

| November 7, 2025 11:20 AM

Kootenai Health is working with Regence BlueShield to renew its contract and ensure continued in-network access for Regence members, a Friday press release said.

"Our shared goal is to reach a favorable agreement before the end of the year — one that supports both organizations and protects access to high-quality, local care for our community," the release said.

If a new agreement is not reached by Jan. 1, Kootenai Health may be considered out-of-network for Regence members.

As the only hospital in the region, Kootenai Health plays a vital role in serving patients across North Idaho, the release said.

While Regence’s current proposal falls below the reimbursement levels offered by other insurance providers, Kootenai Health is optimistic that ongoing discussions will lead to a resolution that aligns with industry benchmarks and supports the sustainability of care, the release said.

“These negotiations are not unusual, and similar conversations are happening at hospitals across Idaho and the country,” said Michele Bouit, chief financial officer at Kootenai Health. “We’re committed to reaching an agreement that reflects the value of care we provide and ensures our patients can continue receiving services close to home.”

Northwest Specialty Hospital said Friday in a press release that it remains a partner with Regence and continues to provide care for patients.

"Northwest Specialty Hospital will remain contracted and in network with Regence Blue Shield, ensuring that patients covered by Regence can continue to receive care at Northwest Specialty Hospital and its affiliated clinics without interruption," the release said. "We are hopeful that Regence and Kootenai Health will come to an agreement that supports our entire region."
