Woodland Middle School students tested their maritime mettle Monday as they raced cardboard boats at SafeSplash Swim School.

With teacher Chris Rogers leading the charge, the students plunged into the pool in their cardboard creations as a culmination of studying mass, volume and density through equations and measurements. The races also served as opportunities for collaboration and teamwork, as well as a way to get out of the classroom for some hands-on learning fun.

"Chris is an amazing teacher that is connecting and inspiring minds of these children," Jennifer Jackson of SafeSplash Swim School said.

This was Woodland's fourth boat race at SafeSplash, which is on Schrieber Way just down the road from the middle school.

Rogers gave a shoutout to SafeSplash's Jackson and Gina VanVoorhis for helping to coordinate the races.

"They really stepped up and organized the event for us," Rogers said. "It went great thanks to their efforts."
