St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wallace Avenue has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The designation is part of the Garden District being named to the National Register of Historic Places.

"Since our early roots at the Fort Sherman Chapel, our sense of connection to this place runs deep," said Lisa Nunlist, longtime parishioner and historian. "We’ve been serving God and the community for 133 years."

Jason Tippeconnic Fox, National Register coordinator, State Historic Preservation Office, said the National Register is America's official list of historic properties "considered important in our past and worthy of preservation.

"Listing in the National Register provides recognition and assists in preserving our Nation's heritage," he wrote.

He said the listing "does not restrict your private property rights to change or dispose of the property in any way but does recognize that the property is of historic significance to the State and community as part of the larger historic district."

St. Luke's is within the Garden District.

Nunlist said church members are pleased with the recognition.

"We are proud of our placement on the National List of Historic Places," she said.
