PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Coeur d'Alene boys, girls claim first district sweep since 2013; Timberlake girls win another district title

| May 10, 2025 1:20 AM

LEWISTON — Coeur d’Alene junior Camden Johnson won in the 110-meter hurdles, then again in the 300 hurdles for the Vikings, who swept team titles for the first time since 2013 at the 6A District 1 meet, which concluded on Friday at Lewiston High.

It was also Coeur d'Alene's first boys district title sine 2017, and the Viking girls first district crown since 2019.

“It was a great couple days for us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “We won again with our depth with both boys and girls. We had a lot of kids scoring points for us in a lot of events. We have a great staff and these are great kids to coach.”

Post Falls senior Chloe Van Volkinburg broke her own school record in the 200 in 25.26 seconds, then added wins in the 400 and 4x400 relay.

“Overall, it was a good team effort,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “I’m really proud of the kids.”

Post Falls senior Isaac McKeown won the javelin with a throw of 166 feet, 4 inches, which leads the 6A classification.

“He’s a really good athlete and is starting to get it figured out,” Quesnell said. “Last year, it wasn’t a state event, but we’re excited to get to do it at state this year.”

Coeur d’Alene senior Maricela Nelson had wins in the 100 and 4x100 relay.

Lake City senior Hazel Kunkel won the 800-meter dash, finishing in 2:19.17.

“Her first lap was 59.1 seconds, which is just unreal,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “For her to just finish the race was amazing, but it really just shows how talented she is. If she can run a 59.1 in the 800, she could definitely go 57 in the 400. Good distance runners, they’re good at a lot of things. And she’s proof of that.”

The boys 4x100 relay team of Chase Young, Boston Shull, Britton Johnson and Caden Tony won in 43.12 seconds.

“It was the first time we’ve been healthy with those four guys and it was good to see them get the baton around the track,” Reed said. “We won it with the worst seed time in 2004, and I’ve been telling them all year we can win it, so who knows? Britton was just amazing today and he’s going to be really good in the 400 when he figures it out in the next couple of years.”
