COEUR d'ALENE — Coeur d’Alene senior Jackson Sims wasn’t satisfied with the outcome of his series in the discus at the 6A District 1 track and field meet on Thursday.

And that was with a 15-foot cushion.

“It definitely wasn’t my best meet, but it got the job done,” said Sims, who won the event with a throw of 146 feet, 6 inches to advance to state. “I’m going to state and I’m looking forward to it."

Sims had won the event five other times during the season, and was fifth at the Legends Twilight Invitational in Walla Walla on April 26.

“Nothing is ever given, and you’ve got to continue to work for it,” Sims said. “It’’s been a good season so far. I’ve had some ups and downs, but more ups right now. I was slightly below my PR today (154-6), but I’m working on it.”

Sims added he spent the winter training at the Iron Wood Throws Center in Rathdrum.

“It’s been phenomenal,” Sims said. “I’ve only got good things to say about it. Bart Templeman’s a great guy and works hard at what he does training the athletes. All of the coaches up there are great and awesome at what they do.”

Templeman coached Sims’ dad, Billy, to a third-place finish in the discus in the 1988 state meet.

“I’m trying to one-up, but I don’t know if I’ll get there,” Jackson Sims said. “We’ve got one meet to do it.”

Sims intends to continue his studies at Division II Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif., next year, and could wind up competing for the school’s track team if he can add a few more feet to his personal best.

“I’m looking to throw 160 and see if I can get some (scholarship) money down there,” said Sims, ranked ninth in 6A in the discus. “I’ve got one meet to go, so we’ll see.”

Coeur d'Alene leads the boys meet with 45 points and the girls meet with 46. The meet concludes today in Lewiston.

"It was a great first day for us," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said. "Both our boys and girls scored in every event. A lot of points out there tomorrow, so we have to have everyone on their part."

The top two individuals and winning relay automatically qualify for state next Friday and Saturday at Mountain View High in Meridian. Wild-card bids are available for the next fastest time statewide.

COEUR d'ALENE — Lakeland sophomore Jackie Robbins understands that there’s still some time to grow in the coming years.

On Thursday, she might have accelerated that process a little bit.

Robbins won the 5A Region 1 girls shot put title at Coeur d'Alene High with a throw of 37 feet, 6 ½ inches to qualify for next week’s state meet at Mountain View High in Meridian.

“This whole process started in the seventh grade for me,” Robbins said. “I throw at the Iron Wood Throwers Center five days a week, year-round. It’s kind of my life and there’s really no Jackie without throwing.”

Robbins also won the discus with a throw of 125-3.

She was also fifth in the Legends Twilight Invitational in Walla Walla in April and was 10th at state as a freshman in the shot put and eighth at state as a freshman in the discus.

“There were a lot of older girls that have been throwing for a lot longer than I have,” Robbins said. “It just humbled me. But I realized that I’m just a sophomore and I’ve still got some room to grow and see where I go.”

Robbins is ranked fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus in 5A.

“There can definitely be pressure with being so young and ranked No. 1 in the district,” Robbins said. “But I had to let this kind of take care of itself and let my throws and distance do what they needed to do.”

Lakeland's boys lead with 45 points. Moscow leads the girls meet with 54.

The top two individuals and winning relay automatically qualify for state next Friday and Saturday. Wild-card bids are available for the next fastest time statewide.

The meet concludes today in Lewiston.
