PREP BASEBALL: Timberlake takes two from Lakeland to open season
• BASEBALL
RATHDRUM — Riley Brennan and Ethan Pecor drove in two runs each for Timberlake in the second game as the Tigers swept the Lakeland Hawks 6-5 and 7-6 in the season opener for both schools at Gorton Field on Wednesday.
“We were really scrappy tonight,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “Not everything was pretty, and it usually isn’t in March. But I loved our fight. We put the ball in play and made enough plays.”
Eric Wylie allowed six hits in the opener for Timberlake.
“We’re going to have to continue to make plays,” Johnson said. “We made some mistakes, but we were happy to limit the mistakes.”
Tadgh Ellwood had three hits and two runs scored for Lakeland in the first game. Jace Taylor had three hits and an RBI in the nightcap for the Hawks.
“Our kids battled the entire way through,” Lakeland coach Al Bevacqua said. “Timberlake’s a good team and this is on me. I’ve got to prepare our guys with better situational hitting. Timberlake executed when they needed to and we’ve got to pick it up as a team.”
Timberlake travels to Potlatch on Friday.
Lakeland visits Lewiston on Saturday for a doubleheader.
