Fire chief: 'It's going to be a long road'
Coeur d'Alene Fire Chief Tom Greif said the department's firefighters are doing their best to stay strong following the fatal shooting of two firefighters and a third who was shot and injured on Sunday.
"We're hanging in there as best we can," he said Monday.
The fire chiefs of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue as well at the presidents of local Firefighter’s Unions 710 and 2856 will hold a joint press conference at 4 p.m. today at the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Headquarters.
The names of slain and injured firefighters from the "unimaginable active shooter tragedy," will be released.
Fire chiefs will also discuss plans to handle the overwhelming outpouring of community support as well as donation information for the respective firefighter families and departments.
Greif said the department has a lot of decisions to make, including the Fourth of July parade.
"We've got to figure out how to move forward with that in a safe manner," he said.
He said mental health support counselors and teams will be brought in to assist firefighters involved in the ambush and assess their well-being.
"It's going to be a long road," Greif said.
