EDITORIAL: City, Ironman should continue working together

| June 29, 2025 1:00 AM

Ironman 70.3 Coeur d'Alene, held last Sunday, was the second year of a three-year contract between the city and the World Triathlon Corporation to hold the race here. We encourage the city and the WTC to extend the contract or begin considering a new one so this event will continue in Coeur d'Alene. Just as Ironman has become part of this city's identity, this city has become part of Ironman.

Ironman is good for the town. Not just in terms of money. It's been around since 2003, initially as a full Ironman. In the early days, thousands volunteered and even more came out to watch. It went through a rough patch for a few years, with declining numbers and leaving some disgruntled residents because it tied up streets for a good chunk of the day.

But the road smoothed out. Ironman 70.3 has reduced affect on traffic as most cyclists are off U.S. 95 by early afternoon and on to the run segment, a double out-and-back-course that winds through the Sanders Beach neighborhood, which has embraced it.

Besides the estimated $12 million in economic impact the 70.3 race has, we like its camaraderie and spirit. Hundreds of volunteers come on board to help the athletes reach the finish line. Hundreds more line streets to cheer for them. It is a fine example of people working together.

The city recognizes its value.

In June 2023, the council voted 5-0 to approve the host venue agreement and keep an Ironman 70.3 in Coeur d’Alene through 2026.

Under the new contract, the race will be held in late June and the course remains the same. Kudos to the North Idaho Sports Commission for raising the $15,000 for the event sponsorship fee.

Ironman 70.3 CDA works hard to give athletes a great day. Last Sunday, they were rewarded with one as the waters of Lake Coeur d'Alene calmed and skies cleared.

The city and WTC have established a strong relationship that has produced a winning union in Coeur d'Alene. We would like to see it stay the course.
