EDITORIAL: Local demonstrations will show how it's done

| June 13, 2025 1:00 AM

What recently happened in Los Angeles, the destruction, the vandalism and the looting of businesses in protest of immigration raids and deportations, will not happen here.

And how do we know that?

The people.

Let’s start with the fact that those doing the damage in L.A., fortunately, aren’t here. No matter how much they may disagree with President Donald Trump’s directives regarding illegal immigration, trashing, stealing, screaming and harming are not acceptable responses. Law enforcement can’t look the other way when it comes to such actions.

We fully expect to see demonstrations Saturday in North Idaho, but we are confident they will be peaceful — a chance to express opinions as allowed by law — because those who live here understand the need to be respectful. We don’t burn cars and throw rocks through windows and block highways if we oppose something. There is a right way to protest, and a wrong way. Those who live here understand that while we may disagree on issues, we still treat each other with basic courtesy. We’re not saying everyone does, but most do. Few in North Idaho resort to hurtful words and actions.

We believe those expected to come out for the “No Kings” protests will keep tabs on their conduct, as well as the conduct of those joining them. They take pride in their community, as do we.

We also have full confidence in law enforcement, as well, to do their job well and respond accordingly. Local officers make their presence known, and that is a good thing.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris put it well: “While I fully support your right to free speech, actions involving violence, destruction of property, including those against law enforcement officers, will be met with a swift and lawful response.

“I remain firmly committed to protecting your constitutional rights and preserving public order in Kootenai County. The rule of law will prevail in our community.”

Yes, it will. The people who live here will see to it.
