A woman died in a fire Sunday morning in Coeur d'Alene.

The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department responded to a blaze at the 3600 block of North 15th Street about 8 a.m. The home was reported to have occupants inside at the time, a press release said.

Police tried to enter the home but high heat and heavy smoke forced them back.

Fire units arrived a few minutes later, entered the home and began fire control and search operations.

The fire was quickly extinguished. The victim was located, transferred to an ambulance and transported to Kootenai Health, where she died.

A small dog ran from the home but returned while investigators were still on scene. Animal Control will care for the dog until family members can be located, the release said.

Fire investigators said the fire was an accident related to an electrical issue.

The Coeur d Alene Fire Department was assisted by Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and Northern Lakes Fire District.
