Nature guide on Saturday

Join volunteer docent Mark Merhab for a hike at the Cougar Bay Nature Preserve along the John C. Pointner Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary trail Saturday. 

The trail follows the shore of Cougar Bay and offers sites and sounds of many waterfowl and aquatic wildlife. The trail continues through forested slopes, up to a viewing platform overlooking Cougar Bay and the city of Coeur d’Alene.

The 2.5-mile hike has an elevation gain of about 400 feet and should take around two hours. There is some heavy natural vegetation along the trail, so insect repellent and sunscreen should be considered when preparing for the hike.

This hike is the perfect opportunity to get outdoors, in a beautiful natural habitat on the northwest side of Lake Coeur d’Alene, and have open discussions about the importance of conserving lands. 

The hike starts at 9 a.m. at the Cougar Bay Nature Preserve parking lot, 1636 S. McAvoy Road, which is just off U.S. 95 south of Coeur d'Alene.
