ABUSE: What is a child’s safety worth?

Time and again, we see survivors come forward, often after years of silence, to report abuse that has left lasting emotional, physical and psychological scars. The courage it takes for a child, or an adult survivor, to speak up cannot be overstated. And yet, when these cases go through the court system, the punishment rarely reflects the lifelong impact of the harm done.

Sentencing doesn’t just reflect justice, it shapes it. When abusers walk away with minimal consequences, it sends a message: that a child’s suffering is worth less than a stolen car, that survivors don’t matter, and that perpetrators won’t be held fully accountable.

We must do better. Laws and sentencing practices must prioritize the safety and dignity of children. That begins with listening to survivors, holding offenders accountable, and ensuring that the punishment fits the crime.
