VETERANS PRESS: Veteran Service Officers: Getting the benefits you earned
A Message from Post 154 At American Legion Post 154, we know that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. That’s why we’re committed to helping every veteran in our community understand and access the benefits they’ve earned through their service.
Key veterans benefits every Idaho veteran should know
1. VA Health Care
Many veterans are eligible for care through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), including preventive services, mental health care, and treatment for service-connected injuries or illnesses. Veterans in Idaho can access VA services through local clinics and facilities, including the Spokane and Boise VA Medical Center and community-based outpatient clinics in places like Twin Falls and Pocatello.
2. Disability Compensation
If you’re dealing with a service-connected injury or illness, you may qualify for monthly tax-free disability payments. Even if you’ve applied before and were denied, changes in law or evidence could make you eligible now. Post 154 can connect you with trained support to help navigate the process.
3. VA Home Loans
VA-backed home loans can help you buy, build, or refinance a home in Idaho, often with no down payment. This benefit can be especially helpful in today’s housing market. Even surviving spouses may be eligible under certain circumstances.
4. Education & Training (GI Bill)
The Post-9/11 GI Bill and other programs cover tuition, housing, books, and more. Veterans and their dependents can use these benefits at Idaho schools and technical programs — including Boise State University, College of Western Idaho, and more.
5. Veterans Pensions & Aid and Attendance
Low-income veterans, particularly those who served during wartime, may be eligible for pension benefits. The VA’s Aid and Attendance program adds financial support for veterans who require help with daily activities.
