LEGION BASEBALL: Lumbermen finish second in pod, advance to bracket play at wood bat tourney

COEUR d’ALENE — The Spokane Expos Williamson 18U team beat the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 9-1 on Friday to win the Thorco Field pod and advance to bracket play today. 

Later Friday, the Lums beat the Edmonton Expos 18U 6-0 to finish second in the pod, and also advance to eight-team bracket play.

In the Lums’ first game, Jack Pierce singled in Tyler Voorhees in the third inning to give the Lums a 1-0 lead. Pierce had two of Coeur d’Alene’s three hits. 

But the Spokane Expos answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, keyed by Kian Carruthers’ two-run double. Carruthers added an RBI single in a five-run fourth for the Expos. 

Lefty Dominic Holden, a recent graduate of Troy High, struck out eight and scattered three hits for the Expos. 

In the Lums’ second game, Kyle Johnson pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out four and walking none. 

Johnson also went 2 for 3. Deacon Hunter had an RBI single in a four-run first inning for Coeur d’Alene.  

Coeur d’Alene (19-16) will play the Spokane Crew 18U today at 12:30 p.m. at Thorco Field in the quarterfinals of bracket play.

Northern Lakes just misses advancing to bracket play 

SPOKANE — The Northern Lakes Mountaineers finished 3-1 in pod play in the Junior Division of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic, after posting a pair of shutouts on Friday, beating the Northeast 49ers AA 8-0 and the Mead Panthers AA 16-0, both at Mead High. 

Northern Lakes (21-4) finished second in its pod, tied with the Yakima Valley Peppers, who handed the Mountaineers their lone loss in pod play, and won the pod. 

In the first game, Ryker Brennan went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Northern Lakes. He had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings. 

Jace Cooksey was 2 for 3 with two RBIs — a run-scoring single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth. 

Ethan Pecor struck out five in six innings for the Mountaineers in a two-hit shutout. 

In the second game, Cooper Lenz went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Northern Lakes.  

Eric Wylie was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Pecor was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. 

Jake Larcher pitched a four-inning one-hitter for the Mountaineers. 

Northern Lakes plays the Glacier Twins of Whitefish, Mont., today at 10 a.m. at Lake City High to conclude tourney play.
