ITD summer construction projects simmer in North Idaho

| July 5, 2025 1:09 AM

As residents ramp up for summer recreation around North Idaho, the Idaho Transportation Department has released information on roadways where summer construction may be taking place.

2025 bridge repairs:

There are repairs across bridges in the five northern counties in Idaho, including the Interstate 90 Veterans Memorial Centennial Bridge and U.S. 95 over Northwest Boulevard.

The total construction cost for the bridge projects is $2.4 million.

Construction on Northwest Boulevard is scheduled to run until the beginning of August.

The Veterans Memorial Bridge project construction is scheduled to run through early September.

This project also included repairs that were done to the bridge over U.S. 95 at Bunco Road near Silverwood. However, repairs and maintenance to that bridge have already been completed this spring/summer.

Last year, that bridge was struck by a piece of heavy equipment being hauled on a trailer on U.S. 95, which caused a significant amount of damage.

I-90 Coeur d'Alene River bridges:

Completion of phase one (construction of the new eastbound bridge) is expected to be completed by late fall.

Traffic will return to its normal configuration for winter, with the open bridge and two lanes open in each direction through the work zone. Crews will return in 2026 to cross traffic over to the new eastbound bridge while they demolish and reconstruct the westbound bridge.

I-90 Highway 41 interchange:

Overall completion of this project is scheduled for 2026; however, traffic will shift onto the newly built section of Highway 41 between Mullan and the interstate and the new single-point urban interchange (SPUI) is expected to be open this fall. Construction costs for this project are estimated at around $78 million.

I-90 expansion:

About 5 miles of I-90 between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene is set for expansion later this summer, with construction going through 2029. The cost estimate for this project is between $200 and $210 million.

I-90 Wolf Lodge to Cedars:

Construction started this year to resurface an 8-mile-long stretch of I-90 from Wolf Lodge to the east side of Fourth of July Pass.

Although initially meeting with small complications in the early phases of construction, ITD officials are confident the project is still on track to be completed by 2026, close to its original date.

Highway 53 Pleasant View interchange:

ITD is constructing an interchange at Highway 53 and Pleasant View Road to improve safety and capacity for traffic on the state highway, help to control access, and eliminate two at-grade railroad crossings with the BNSF rail line.

Construction began last year and is set for completion in 2026.

Currently, crews with both ITD and BNSF are on site working to get a temporary signal activated at Highway 53 and Prairie Avenue.

The overall cost of this project is around $30 million, with funds being contributed through ITD, BNSF, the Post Falls Highway District and a U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railway grant that was awarded.

Highway 54 Spirit Lake to Athol:

ITD is reconstructing Highway 54 between Spirit Lake and Greystone Road near Athol.

Preliminary work, such as utility relocation and tree removal, began in 2026 and this project is expected to be completed in 2026.
