TRAGEDY: North Idaho stands together

| July 4, 2025 1:00 AM

On Sunday, my hometown of Coeur d’Alene experienced a tragedy that has left our entire community in mourning. Three of our brave firefighters were ambushed and shot while doing what they do best — serving and protecting others. These were men who ran toward danger to keep the rest of us safe. Their loss is not just a blow to their families and fellow first responders — it’s a loss for all of us.

But even in the midst of this heartbreak, I saw something incredible. On Tuesday, we stood shoulder to shoulder — lining the streets and bridges, flags waving, hands over hearts — as we honored the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In those moments, there were no political parties, no divisions. Just people. Humans. Neighbors. A community bound together by sorrow, love and deep respect. It reminded me of the kind of place North Idaho truly is. We are more than headlines and hardships — we are resilient, we are compassionate and we show up when it matters most. And right now, it matters. Let this tragedy be a call not just for reflection, but for unity. Let it remind us to check on each other, support our first responders and continue showing up for one another — not just when it’s easy, but especially when it’s hard. We are strongest when we stand as one.
