LEGION BASEBALL: Lums open with two wins at Spokane/Cd'A wood bat tourney

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” team jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings en route to a 6-1 victory over the Changeup Baseball Archers Red 18U for its second win of the day to open the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic on Thursday at Thorco Field. 

Earlier, the Lums beat the Bitteroot Red Sox of Hamilton, Mont., 6-2. 

In the second game, Kyle Johnson hit an RBI single in the second inning, and Travis Usdrowski drove in a pair of runs for Coeur d’Alene. 

Aven Adams, Tyler Voorhees and Asa Morton teamed to strike out six and scatter three hits for the Lums. 

In the first game, Jack Pierce hit a two-run double to highlight a five-run fifth inning that gave Coeur d’Alene the lead. Pierce finished 2 for 4 and scored twice. 

Tanner Franklin struck out six, walked none and scattered seven hits in a complete game for the Lums. 

Pod play wraps up today, with Coeur d’Alene (18-15) facing the Spokane Expos (Williamson) at 4:30 p.m. and the Edmonton Expos at 7, both at Thorco Field.

Northern Lakes splits on first day of tourney 

SPOKANE — Eric Wylie went 3 for 3 with five RBIs as the Northern Lakes Mountaineers beat the Billings Bandits 13-3 in their first game in the Junior Division of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic at Mead High. 

In their second game, the Mountaineers fell 4-3 to the Yakima Valley Peppers 17U, also at Mead. 

In the first game, Wylie had an RBI single in the first inning, and two-run singles in the third and fifth innings. 

Tadhg Ellwood struck out nine in 4.2 innings for Northern Lakes. Griffin Tamagni went 2 for 3 with an RBI and four runs scored. 

Against the Peppers, Ethan Pecor went 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the first inning for the Mountaineers. 

Northern Lakes (19-4) wraps up play at the Mead pod today with games against the 49ers AA at 1 p.m. and the Mead Panthers at 6,
