Honoring our heroes, celebrating responsibly

A letter from the fire chief to the community

With the holiday weekend approaching, I want to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation to every member of this incredible community. You have shown us the true meaning of unity, compassion and resilience.

On May 20, you sent a powerful message with your overwhelming 74% approval of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department’s third General Obligation Bond election since 2005. Your trust in us fuels our commitment to serve and protect this great community.

Just weeks later, on June 29, our first responder families endured one of the darkest days in their history. The tragic loss of two dedicated firefighters, and the critical injury of a third, has left an indelible mark upon us. The level of support shown, from downtown Spokane to the heart of Coeur d’Alene, has been extraordinary and profoundly moving.

As we prepare for the Fourth of July weekend, we ask all residents and valued guests to join us in honoring not only the brave first responders who serve daily, but especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Since beginning my career here in 1992, I have had the absolute honor and privilege of working alongside some amazing public servants who give selflessly asking for little, and delivering so much, day after day.

This Friday, our community will come together in celebration with a spectacular parade and one of the region’s most impressive fireworks displays. In the midst of celebration, I ask one more favor of you all: Celebrate safely and responsibly. Let your actions reflect the strength and spirit of this community and serve as a tribute to those we have lost and those who continue to protect us.

On behalf of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, thank you truly for your ongoing support, your compassion, and your shared commitment to making this community what it is today.

Have a safe and meaningful Fourth of July weekend.
