GUNS: Shootings are the new norm

| July 2, 2025 1:00 AM

Having resided in Coeur d’Alene for many years, I still remain in awe of its natural beauty. When I heard about the tragic shooting, I immediately thought of all of the wonderful people whom I met when I lived there.

I have come to the sad realization that, unfortunately, the shootings will continue unabated. This is the new norm. They are woven into the fabric of American life. We live in a society that essentially allows (and in some states, encourages) very easy access to a wide range of guns, including assault weapons which I thought were intended only for use in war.

I reject the feeble “thoughts and prayers” that politicians offer after every one of these senseless shootings. I doubt that their thoughts and prayers will offer much comfort to the children and families of these slain heroes.

We are the only civilized nation in the world that allows for the mass distribution of these killing devices (that’s exactly what they are). Will we ever see the day when politicians will grow a spine and rein in this holy terror? I fear not.
