EDITORIAL: Strengthening our state while honoring veterans

| February 7, 2025 1:00 AM

Idaho has an opportunity to honor our veterans while strengthening our workforce. House Bill 40, sponsored by House Speaker Mike Moyle (R-Star), would expand income tax exemptions for military retirees — a move that could attract valuable talent to our state while supporting those who served our nation.

Currently, Idaho offers military retirees various benefits, including state park passes, special vehicle license plates, and hunting and fishing licenses. While these perks are appreciated, they fall short of what other states provide. Idaho ranks in the middle tier nationally for military retiree benefits, as states increasingly compete to attract these skilled veterans.

Consider Maryland's proposed Keep Our Heroes Home Act, which would double the tax exemption for military retirement pay. California, Virginia and Montana are pursuing similar legislation. Meanwhile, Texas and Florida — widely considered the most military retiree-friendly states — already offer substantial tax incentives.

When presenting the bill to the House Revenue and Taxation Committee, Speaker Moyle emphasized how this legislation would draw military retirees to Idaho, enriching our workforce with their specialized skills and experience. The bill has already passed the House with overwhelming support and awaits consideration in the Senate before potentially reaching Governor Brad Little's desk.

This isn't merely about tax relief — it's an investment in Idaho's future. Military retirees bring leadership and technical expertise, and a strong work ethic that can benefit various sectors of our economy. Their contributions could far outweigh the cost of tax exemptions.

For Idaho to remain competitive and support our veterans, passing House Bill 40 is crucial. We encourage readers to contact their state senators and voice support for this important legislation. It's time for Idaho to demonstrate that we truly value those who served our nation.
