PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Timberlake runs past Bonners Ferry, earns top seed to districts

| February 5, 2025 1:25 AM

BONNERS FERRY — With the next one, Timberlake can get a lot closer to its goal of returning to the state basketball tournament.

First things first, the Tigers have to take care of business on Monday.

Senior Diana Nelson had 20 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots for the Tigers, who beat the Bonners Ferry Badgers 62-24 in the Intermountain League finale on Tuesday.

With the win, Timberlake (17-3, 2-0 IML) will host Bonners Ferry (12-8, 0-2) on Monday at 6 p.m., in the first game of the 4A District 1 tournament. If Timberlake wins, the Tigers will advance to a state play-in game on Feb. 15 at Prairie High against the third-place team from District 3 (Boise area). If Bonners Ferry wins, the teams will play a best-of-3 championship series to determine who advances to the play-in game.

“Hopefully we’re taking it one game at a time,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “The game in front of us is the most important game, and hopefully that’s where the girls heads are at.”

Junior Malia Miller had nine points and a school-record 13 assists for Timberlake, which beat Bonners Ferry 63-24 on Jan. 18 in Spirit Lake. Senior Jozee MacArthur had 12 points, senior Marissa Needs 11 points and senior Lucy Simpson five steals for Timberlake, which trailed 12-9 after the first quarter before outscoring Bonners Ferry 20-0 in the second quarter.

“We settled in after that first quarter,” Matt Miller said. “We got a little tougher. We had a tough time adjusting to everything and we started to share the ball really well and Diana did a good job of finishing at the basket.”

Taren Bateman scored eight points for Bonners Ferry.
