EDITORIAL: Take heart, your health is in your hands

| February 5, 2025 1:00 AM

Your heart works tirelessly for you every moment of every day — isn't it time to return the favor? The American Heart Association's 2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics remind us of a sobering reality: Cardiovascular disease remains our nation's leading killer, claiming more lives annually than cancer and accidents combined. Here in Idaho, we're not immune to this trend.

The numbers paint a concerning picture: Over 72% of American adults carry excess weight, and more than half face diabetes or pre-diabetes. But here's the empowering truth. While we can't control our genetics, we can take meaningful steps to protect our hearts. Simple choices made daily add up to significant changes: taking a walk during lunch break, choosing heart-healthy foods, finding moments of calm in our busy lives or finally committing to quit smoking.

We're blessed with exceptional cardiac care resources right here in North Idaho. The Kootenai Health Heart Center offers cutting-edge technology, while Kootenai Heart Clinics boasts 40 dedicated healthcare providers ready to partner with you on your wellness journey.

This February — Heart Health Month — gives us a perfect opportunity to prioritize self-care. Want to take a concrete step toward better health? Join us on Feb. 7 at the Hagadone Event Center for Heart to Heart, a free educational event sponsored by the Innovia Foundation and Kootenai Health. Registered participants will receive comprehensive screenings including blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, lipid panel and glucose testing, along with a heart-healthy breakfast.

Remember, caring for your heart isn't selfish — it's essential. When you nurture your own health, you're better equipped to care for those you love. Our community is known for its big heart; let's make sure those hearts stay strong and healthy for years to come.

Take that first step today. Your heart will thank you.
