DEI BAN: A step backward in equality
Idaho’s DEI ban is a devastating blow to fairness and inclusivity. As someone with tribal heritage, I find this decision heartbreaking and infuriating. Senator Ben Toews of Coeur d’Alene claims the initiative will “promote free speech” while shutting down centers supporting women and minority students. But I have to ask, Mr. Toews: what is your real goal?
Toews claims this will “move us in the right direction” and create a system where “we’re all equal.” Yet DEI training is exactly about equality. It fosters fairness, respect and inclusivity, ensuring that workplaces and campuses value everyone, regardless of identity or belief. Banning DEI doesn’t promote equality — it strips it away, silencing the voices of those who’ve fought hardest to be heard.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about free speech — it’s about protecting hate speech while dismantling programs that support marginalized groups. It prioritizes the comfort of a few at the expense of many. Mr. Toews, your actions directly contradict your words. Taking away tools for fairness and respect isn’t leadership — it’s exclusion.
Idaho deserves better than this regressive agenda. We need leaders who value diversity and are willing to protect the rights of all citizens, not just those they agree with. This ban doesn’t create equality — it destroys it.
Sincerely, Leaning Left in North Idaho
