Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day

| December 28, 2025 1:00 AM

The current weather pattern calls for mild conditions for the Polar Bear Plunge at Sanders Beach on Jan. 1, which means if you've thought about trying this tradition, it's a good time to do so.

The forecast is calling for cloudy skies Thursday, with highs near 40 and lows of about 30 degrees. The water temperature for Lake Coeur d'Alene is about 38 degrees, which is about average for this time of year.

Hundreds of adults and kids are expected to line up at Sanders Beach at noon on New Year's Day for a dip, run in, dive under, run out screaming — into Lake Coeur d'Alene.

The Polar Bear Plunge started with a few friends in 1978 and now attracts about 500 people. Many wear costumes.

People generally begin arriving in the morning and stake their spot on the beach. A countdown lets you know when it's time to go.

It's free, and anyone is welcome.
