High-wind warning for Kootenai County
The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for Kootenai County, in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Southwest winds of 25 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected, with isolated gusts near 70 mph possible in exposed and higher elevation areas.
"These conditions may result in downed trees and power lines, widespread power outages, hazardous travel conditions and falling debris that could cause property damage or injury," according to a press release from the Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management.
According to Avista, saturated soil from recent rain, combined with strong winds, increases the likelihood of outages caused by falling trees and limbs, which can bring down power lines.
"Crews are ready with fueled and stocked fleet vehicles, warehouse supplies are in place in Spokane and outer offices, and assessment teams are standing by," an Avista press release said. "Wire guard teams are prepared to help ensure public safety near downed power lines, tree crews are mobilized, and employees are moving from their typical day-to-day responsibilities to assist in storm-related activities."
With sustained winds expected, estimated restoration times are not likely to be available until the storm has passed and Avista can complete damage assessments. This process may take 24 hours or more, depending on the extent of the damage, the release said.
Residents are urged to remain indoors, stay on the lower levels of their homes, avoid windows, and secure loose outdoor items such as trash cans, holiday decorations, and patio furniture. Remain alert for falling tree limbs or debris and use extreme caution if travel is necessary, the release said.
Residents should monitor local weather updates and be prepared for possible power outages.
If outages occur, contact your local utility provider. Reserve 911 for emergencies only.
