FAST FIVE Barbara Williams: Coordinating Wreaths Across America with honor

by DEVIN WEEKS
Staff Writer | December 13, 2025 1:00 AM

Meet Barbara Williams, who has lived in North Idaho with her husband Pete for 34 years and supports veteran events in the Rathdrum area.

When Barb's husband became a member of the Rathdrum American Legion Post 154, she decided to get involved with some of their events. She actively is involved with the Easter egg hunt, Memorial Day ceremony, National Poppy Day, Rathdrum Days, Veterans Recognition Event and Wreaths Across America.

1) What is Wreaths Across America, and how long have you been involved with the program?

I have had the pleasure of being Wreaths Across America coordinator for Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum for the past seven years.

Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization. Our mission is to remember fallen soldiers, honor those who served and teach the next generation about freedom and sacrifice. The laying of wreaths is held nationwide on the second Saturday in December (that's today, Dec. 13) and coordinated at the same time as laying of wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery.

2) What are a few profound moments you have experienced or impactful stories you have heard throughout your time with Wreaths Across America?

Our event has been held in sunshine, rain and snow. To see the community come out and support us regardless of the weather is heartwarming. Watching the smiles on the children’s faces as they trudge through the snow to lay a wreath is precious. I have had parents tell me how much they appreciate this program as it’s a learning experience for their children.

3) Why does this cause matter to you, and what does it mean for our community to have this program here in North Idaho?

I believe it’s very important to remember our fallen veterans and to let their families know how much we appreciate their sacrifices. Approximately 280 veterans are laid to rest in Pinegrove Cemetery. Our goal is to ensure that every one of them receives a wreath as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude. The people of Rathdrum embrace this event wholeheartedly. We have volunteers from the Heritage Girls, Boy Scouts, John Brown Elementary and Heritage Christian Academy, including parents and their children who are all excited to participate. Without the support of our volunteers, donations from local groups, business, individuals, American Legion Post 154 and Rathdrum Parks and Rec, this event would not be possible.

4) What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I love to shoot and belong to Armed Women of America.

5) What message would you like to share with our military families of servicemembers past and present this holiday season?

They are never forgotten. Our veterans, past and present, put their lives on the line for the love of our country, our way of life, our belief in God and our freedom. Without their sacrifices none of this would be possible. Thank you and God bless.
