THANKS: In memory of Dr. James C. Dobson

Dr. James Dobson (1936-1925) graduated to heaven last week. As a young mom, I read many of his books. I especially gleaned from “Dare to Discipline,” “Preparing for Adolescence” and “When God Doesn’t Make Sense.” As a young family, we loved listening to Focus on the Family’s Adventures in Odyssey radio program. I can still remember the main characters — Mr. Whitaker, Eugene and Connie. Those hours and hours of listening to characters solve real-life problems from a biblical worldview was instructive and entertaining.

Dr. Dobson was an adviser to five U.S. presidents, authored 70 books, founded Focus on the Family in 1977, and launched Family Talk in 2010. Dr. Dobson fought pornography, promoted homeschooling and poured his life into helping families thrive. According to his son, Ryan, “He (Dr. Dobson) was bold. Yes, he spoke hard truths. But beneath all of it was a deep, quiet desire to help families, to protect children and to introduce people to Jesus. Not to condemn. To save. To restore. To heal.”

In 2005, our family took a road trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., with the intended purpose of visiting Focus on the Family’s Welcome Center. We devoured hamburgers and ice cream at Whit’s End Soda Shoppe, explored Kids’ Korner play area, and (the kids) were voice actors for one of a pretend AiO episode.

Dr. Dobson’s voice may have influenced national policy, but through his daily radio program and publications, he gave me hope and practical wisdom as I raised my family. From the bottom of my heart, “Thank you, Dr. Dobson.” We need more men of integrity like you.
