Labor Day celebrations slated for Sunday in Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE — Labor Day celebrations will be in full swing Sunday at the Big Park — even though “the world's shortest parade” is a no-go for a second year.

“We stopped having one because of the lack of participation,” a spokesperson for the Spirit Event Committee said.

The last few parades only saw two or three participants, the spokesperson added.

In its heyday, procession usually took about five minutes or less in total to make its way down Maine Street.

Even without the parade, the classic car show put on by Roy Racy VFW Post 1473 will be making a return to the Big Park, as will vendors and live music. Last year, over 70 classics, hot rods, muscle cars and unique vehicles were displayed.

Festivities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
