WAKES: A structural threat

I’m writing to raise a growing concern about the impact of wake surf boats on our local waterways — specifically the increasing shoreline erosion caused by their large, manufactured wakes.

Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen a noticeable uptick in damage to the shoreline, docks and moored vessels. This isn’t just a seasonal nuisance — it’s a structural threat to the long-term health of our lakefront. The issue is compounded by the fact that boat dealers are expanding their inventory of wake-enhanced surf boats, many of which are designed to produce even larger waves than previous models.

If this trend continues unchecked, the erosion will accelerate, undermining both private and public infrastructure and degrading the natural shoreline. It’s not just a matter of aesthetics — it’s a matter of environmental stewardship and property protection.

I urge local officials and community leaders to consider the following actions:

• Implement a wave impact report to raise awareness of high-wake activity.

• Review and update wake regulations, including distance-from-shore minimums and designated surf zones.

• Engage with boat dealers to encourage responsible sales practices and educate buyers on wake etiquette and environmental impact.

We all share a responsibility to preserve the integrity of our lake. I hope this issue will be addressed before the damage becomes irreversible.
