TRAFFIC: Drivers unsafe and discourteous

This is in answer to George Silva’s “Traffic” letter in Sunday’s Press.

Yes, way too much traffic. Many of our newer residents were raised in large cities, they learned how to negotiate multiple lanes of traffic and aggressive driving.

The Idaho Driver’s Handbook published July 2021 has the following under subtitle STOPS, PAGE 73:

“Stopping behind a Vehicle: When stopping behind another vehicle, a safe driving habit is to leave enough distance between the vehicles to see the rear tires (where they touch the ground) of the vehicle the vehicle in front of your if someone crashes into the rear of your vehicle or allow you room to go around a stalled vehicle without backing and causing a traffic hazard.”

And I would add if a traffic light refuses to give a through red.

Also traffic studies have found if cars in a line at red light are spaced a car length apart — and IF — drivers are paying attention, traffic moves more quickly at the green light.

I believe Washington has the same item in their code.

Aggressive drivers like to come within inches of the car in front of them at red lights. How unsafe and discourteous.
