Cd’A man gets prison for domestic battery

COEUR d’ALENE — A man who pleaded guilty to punching a woman in the face in front of a child received a prison sentence, according to the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Mark W. Melvin, 58, of Coeur d’Alene, pleaded guilty in May to domestic battery in the presence of a child, a felony. 

First District Judge Casey Simmons sentenced Melvin to 15 years in prison with parole eligibility after four years. 

The charge stems from March 11, when prosecutors said Melvin punched his significant other during an argument. A 5-year-old child witnessed the incident, according to a news release. The woman Melvin punched sustained bruises and swelling. 

Melvin fled the scene after hitting the woman, prosecutors said, but because he was on probation and required to wear an ankle monitor at the time, police located and arrested Melvin the following day. 

According to the prosecutor’s office, Melvin had a prior criminal history, including three convictions for domestic battery.
