EDITORIAL: North Idaho State Fair far more than fun

| August 15, 2025 1:00 AM

The North Idaho State Fair opens today and as usual, and in "Keeping Tradition Alive," as is its theme, it promises to deliver fun with games, rides, music, entertainment, food and drink. You know all about those things.

But it's much, much more.

Let's start with the aforementioned tradition

Some of North Idaho's most treasured pieces of the past are brought to life at the fair. This is where you can see how things used to be made, how they were done, and how they endure to this day. Generations pass down skills that create the crafts that will be on display. These are the same skills that built the foundation upon which we stand.

The economic benefits can't be overlooked

The Kootenai County Fairgrounds, home to the fair, operates year-round. Last year, it hosted 249 unique events over 748 event days, welcoming about 400,000 guests and contributing an estimated $30 million annually to the economy.

Our youth get a chance to shine

They work hard raising critters for the stock show and sale. They learn the value of hard work, accountability and responsibility. These are the future leaders of our country. The core of who they are starts at home, of course, but it's strengthened by the fair.

Civic groups

Organizations like the Knights of Columbus and others round up scores of members to volunteer at the fair so they can work their booths and earn money, so they can help others in a number of ways. They put in long hours on hot days. Their dedication to providing good products and services, all so they can raise funds to better the lives of those around them, is an example to all. Let's support them.

The people

We hope, when you visit the fair, you take time to talk to people. Whether they are manning the rides and games, trying to sell you something, caring for exhibits, playing music or watching after their pigs, young and old at the fair like to talk, if given the chance, and they have wonderful stories to tell. And the people themselves are pretty special.

We could go on, but you get the idea. The North Idaho State Fair is one of our best events of the year. Yes, good times await and we all can use more laughter in our lives. We think Alexcia Jordan, fair general manager, put it well:

"We're not just putting on fair —  we're honoring our heritage and investing in the future."

We could not agree more.

See you there.
