COLUMN: Two tasks for our time

Sarah Martin’s Aug. 6 column titled “Two tasks for our time” starts with a paragraph which everyone could agree with. This is a common feature of Democrat party rhetoric. Where things go terribly wrong is in the actions that follow.

The author cites the importance of recognizing the value of each person, and empowering free speech. So how did that work out? The party has spent most of the last 10 years trying to thwart the will of the voters with their “Resistance.” When people have spoken against them, they sought to cancel them. They tried to have opposition candidates removed from state ballots. These are actions that threaten our democracy, but they seem not to care. 

Their frequent use of pejorative descriptions of large sections of the voting public as deplorables, phobes, and/or racists displays the contempt they have for anyone who disagrees with them. The voters need to ask themselves why they should give the power to govern to people who hold them in contempt.

For their part, the Democrats could, in time, regain credibility if they apologize and start making their actions match their words. For them, willfully ignoring the lessons of the last election will not end well.
