PREP ROUNDUP: Max Cervi-Skinner breaks course record at Farragut Invitational

ATHOL — Coeur d’Alene High senior Max Cervi-Skinner finished the Timberlake Farragut Invitational in a course-record 15 minutes, 12.68 seconds, leading the Vikings to the team title on Saturday at Farragut State Park.

Senior Zack Cervi-Skinner (second), sophomore Wyatt Carr (fourth) and sophomore Gabe Heule (14th) also finished in the top 20 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished with 41 points.

Lake City senior Logan Anderson was eighth.

Coeur d’Alene junior Dakota Keyworth was the top local finisher in the girls race, finishing in 19:25.41. Lake City senior Hazel Kunkel (seventh), Timberlake junior Vanessa McLachlan (12th, Post Falls senior Kaylynn Misner (13th) and Coeur d’Alene senior Sonja Jones (17th) finished in the top 20.

Meridian senior Paisley Taylor won the girls race in 18:35.06.

Sandpoint takes two at Judy Fong

LEWISTON — The Bulldogs picked up their first tournament wins of the season, defeating Logos 25-22, 25-22 and Timberline of Weippe 25-17, 25-9 at the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament at Lewiston High.

With the two wins, which included a loss to Troy 25-22, 25-11, Sandpoint reached the gold bracket but was outed by Lewiston 25-13, 25-19 after the first round. Senior Audrey Petruso totaled 32 digs and was the team’s leading serve receiver. Junior Hazel Pierce had a team-high 18 kills on the day.

“Her timing and power clicked and she had some amazing swings,” Sandpoint coach Piper Wahlin said of Pierce. “We did some positive things; it’s always good to get some wins.”

Sandpoint (0-5) hosts Lake City on Tuesday.


Priest River d.

Newport 

PRIEST RIVER — Sophomore Raygn Turner had nine kills and six digs, junior Jayda Storro added five aces and 13 assists, and the Spartans swept cross-border rival Newport 25-23, 25-23, 25-8 to push their winning streak to three matches.

The visiting Grizzlies, down as much as seven points in the second set, rallied to take a 22-20 lead, but Priest River pulled out its second consecutive 25-23 set win to gain a 2-0 edge. The Lady Spartans dominated the entire way in the third set, taking it by 17 points, their largest set win this year.

“Our team decided to pick it up competitively at the end when it mattered most,” Priest River coach Katlyn Ward said. “The girls just kept their heads up the whole game.”

Junior Toni Marinello had 10 digs for Priest River (3-0), which hosts Riverside on Monday.


Genesis Prep d. 

Lakeside 

POST FALLS — Laya Daniels had eight kills, seven aces and six blocks as the host Jaguars swept the Knights 26-24, 25-19, 25-21 in a Scenic Idaho Conference match at The Courts. 

Madi Cooper had five kills and three aces for Genesis Prep (2-1, 2-0 SIC). Pearl Covey added 10 digs and three aces, Kennedy Prendergast 18 assists and two aces. 

“The girls bounced back well after our loss to Timberlake,” Genesis Prep coach Paula Thurston said. “It's early in the season, and each match we're getting stronger and more comfortable in what we're doing. Overall, I'm proud of how the girls played today.” 

Lakeside (2-1, 1-1) plays host to Kootenai on Tuesday. 

Genesis Prep is home vs. North Idaho Christian School on Tuesday.

CALDWELL — Three different players scored for the visiting Bulldogs, who fell in a nonleague match to the Falcons (1-0-2), who have 14 seniors on their roster.

In a game that saw temperatures reach the mid-90s and was a bit smokey, the Bulldogs went into halftime trailing 2-1 after junior Huxley Hall sunk a penalty kick during the 29th minute. Sandpoint coach Dan Anderson said the team went into halftime, regrouped, and changed some things around. 

In the second half, senior Bridger Cudmore sent a through ball to senior Luke Leavitt who scored after a one-on-one with the Falcons’ goalkeeper. Sandpoint conceded two more goals in the 50th and 52nd minute before junior Asher Hazen scored on a header, assisted by Knox Williams, during the 76th minute.

“Overall I’m happy with the performance,” Anderson said. “We played a very fast and skillful team and I’m glad we had the opportunity to get a longer road trip under our belts. Once the boys realized they could hang with them, they responded well and I’m pleased with the grit the boys showed today.”

Sandpoint (2-2-1) travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

“We played a little sloppy today, but kept the pressure on them all 80 minutes,” Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “ We definitely need to play better on Tuesday in Orofino to keep it competitive.  Orofino has a special keeper (Cash Nelson) between the posts.”

COEUR d’ALENE — It took a little more time, but freshman Ryann Blair made her first varsity goal a memorable one.

Blair scored in extra time (because of an injury) for the Timberwolves, who beat the Blue Devils at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“Ryann got the ball off a corner kick where it bounced around, and she just struck a great ball,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We had a lot of great opportunities, but just didn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Our play in the final third of the field was the best we’ve had all year, but the shots just weren’t on frame. Our players played hard and you can’t ask for more. They’ve shown up, competed and worked hard all year.”

Lake City (5-0-1) travels to Lewiston on Tuesday.
