| May 26, 2024 1:15 AM

MISSOULA, Mont. — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen ‘AA’ team opened the season with a pair of losses in the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Day Tournament, falling in the second game of the day 12-11 to the host Mavericks on a walk-off single at Paddleheads Field on Saturday.

Coeur d’Alene fell to Vauxhall Academy of Alberta 12-8 in its opener.

“We hit it really well all the way through the lineup,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “Vauxhall, they’re a college team and they can mash it. Missoula’s really good and they were on today as well. There’s a lot of things we can take away from today and build on.”

Ty Shepard, Chase Saunders, Austin DeBoer and Travis Usdrowski had two RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene against Missoula, which took a 6-1 lead after the first inning.

Coeur d’Alene battled back to take a 9-8 lead on a sacrifice fly by Saunders to score Shepard in the top of the third inning. Shepard gave Coeur d’Alene the lead again in the fifth inning on an RBI single to score DeBoer to make it 10-9.

Usdrowski singled to score DeBoer to make it 11-11 in the sixth, but the Mavericks ended the game in the bottom of the inning as Bryce Ostrom tripled with one out and scored on a groundout.

Earlier, Charlie Dixon had a two-run single to score Chase Saunders and Austin DeBoer to give Coeur d’Alene a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Lums added another run to make it 5-1 on an RBI double by Isaac Ziegler.

After Vauxhall rallied to tie the game at 5-5, Saunders gave the Lums a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly, scoring Ty Shepard in the fourth inning. Vauxhall regained the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs to take a 12-6 lead.

Owen Mangini hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for Coeur d’Alene.

Coeur d'Alene is scheduled to face Badlands Baseball today at 11 a.m. PST.
