STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Golden finishes ... Lakeland's Munyer repeats; Post Falls' Cameron, Timberlake's Tebbe, Coeur d'Alene Charter's Russell, Carr also nab titles

| May 19, 2024 1:25 AM

If that final jump didn’t tell you what Lakeland High junior Ziya Munyer thought after landing a jump of 36 feet, 6 ¼ inches, her dad — and jumps coach Jacob — did the speaking for her.

“Back-to-back, baby.”

Munyer notched her second state 4A triple jump championship on her final attempt on Saturday at Mountain View High in Meridian.

“It was kind of a crazy series,” Ziya Munyer said. “I scratched my first two jumps in the prelims and finished fifth, but got into the finals. I had people in front and behind me so I had to kind of wait things out.”

Lauren Christiansen, a sophomore from Blackfoot, jumped 35-4 ¼ in her final attempt before Munyer’s final try in the finals.

“I just knew standing on the runway that it was my last jump ever,” said Munyer, who intends to graduate early next winter and move on to Weber State to play volleyball. “I knew I had it in me and my competitive spirit came out a little bit.”

Munyer added she was so close on her final jump, she was nervous she’d scratched.

“As soon as I hit the ground, I wanted to stay patient,” Munyer said. “As soon as the official said ‘mark,’ and said it was over 36 feet, my dad just yelled. I was just happy to perform on that last jump. It was a little bittersweet, but good.”

4A: Lakeland 4x100 relay team of Regan Wright, Melia Gilbert, Karstyn Kiefer and Sapphire Ruelle finished second in school record time 49.39 seconds.

Other Lakeland placers included Weston Saputski (sixth in the 100 and fifth in the 4x100 relay along with Apolo Gratzinger, Jaron Yager and Kayden Karle), Ethan Abbott (eighth in the 400) and Ben Roth (fourth in high jump) for the boys. Macy Bretveld was fourth in the high jump and the 4x200 relay team of Natalee Rose, Melia Gilbert, Kiefer and Ruelle was fourth.

Bishop Kelly of Boise won its fourth straight boys team title and seventh in eight years.

Skyview of Nampa won the girls title.

5A: Coming down the stretch in the boys 400-meter dash, neither Post Falls junior Cobe Cameron or Rocky Mountain senior Braden Ankeny wanted to give an inch.

“It was a crazy finish,” Cameron said. “Both of us wanted to win so bad. He was pushing me and I was pushing him.”

Then, Cameron just went for it.

“I dove for the finish line,” said Cameron, who edged Ankeny by four-tenths of a second, winning the race in 47.79 seconds, a school record in the meet at Mountain View High. “I was on the ground, but looked at the times real quick and got right back up because I was so excited. It’s really surreal. I was just trying to go 48, and had no idea I could run as fast as I did. I still can’t believe it.”

Cameron was also part of the school’s 4x400 relay team that also included Trenton McLean, Tallan McCracken and Dylan Wolfe, which finished runner-up in a school-record 3 minutes, 20.99 seconds.

“I ran a lot of events today, and knew I was going to be tired,” said Cameron, who also was eighth in the 200. “They were all good runners, and we got into a real good position at the end. But second isn’t too bad.”

Post Falls senior Kinlee McLean was seventh in the 400 as well as the 4x200 relay along with Reagan Hutchinson, Chloe Van Volkinburg and Millie Cosper. The Trojan girls 4x400 relay team of Kailey Walton, Trinity Byrne, Cosper and McLean was third and Rihanna Legler was eighth in the pole vault.

The Trojan boys 4x100 relay team of Taycen Genatone, Wolfe, Caden Smith and Gio Carlino was seventh.

Coeur d'Alene senior Jakan Lawrence was third in the pole vault, senior Lachlan May fifth in the 800 and juniors Max Cervi-Skinner (seventh) and Zack Cervi-Skinner (eighth) in the 1,600. Coeur d'Alene junior Kelsey Carroll was fifth in the shot put.

Rocky Mountain won its eighth straight team title dating back to 2016. The Grizzlies of Meridian also won four straight from 2011 to 2014. Boise won its fourth straight girls team title.

3A: After setting a school record in Friday’s preliminary round in the 110-hurdles in 14.86 seconds, Timberlake senior Caius Tebbe had to make it count again on Saturday at Middleton High.

He did, twice.

Tebbe claimed the state 3A title in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.20 seconds, then won the 300 hurdles in 39.77 seconds on Saturday.

“The 300 time was such a big PR for me, it felt amazing,” Tebbe said. “The wind was blowing right in my face, so it was a tough race. The guy in second (Ben Walker of McCall-Donnelly)  was pushing me with his left arm, and I was hitting him with my right arm. We just kept wacking each other and pushed each other to the finish line.”

Caius’ father, Josh, was Timberlake’s first state track and field champion, winning the then A-2 long jump in 2001 (20 feet, 10 ½ inches).

“My dad is the reason I’ve done sports because he’s encouraged me to do them,” Caius Tebbe said. “I never beat his records in the jumps, but I’ve got them in the hurdles now. My dad just continued to push me to go harder and faster.”

“It’s everyone’s goal to be a state champion, but it’s been a process for him,” said Timberlake coach Brian Kluss, who coached the Timberlake boys to state titles in 2006 and 2007. “Last year, he had to compete with his own teammate (Wyatt MacArthur), where one would win the 110 and the other would win the 300. Caius comes to practice each day, and he’s earned it. He wasn’t going to be denied today, and just finished it off.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Nathan Russell claimed the 800 and 1,600, as did sophomore Annabelle Carr for the Panthers. It was the second straight 800 title for Carr, who was also third in the 4x400 relay.  Nolan Oyler (sixth in the 1,600), Helen Oyler (third in 800, third in 4x400 relay), Reagan Meine (sixth in 100 hurdles, fourth in 300 hurdles, third in 4x400 relay) also placed for Coeur d'Alene Charter. Emily Russell was also a part of the 4x400 relay.

McCall-Donnelly won the boys team title, snapping a run of two straight by Sugar-Salem.

Weiser won its second straight girls title.

2A: Nampa Christian (boys) and Soda Springs (girls) claimed team titles at Middleton. Kellogg's Jackson Stepro was fourth in the 400, St. Maries' Isaiah Gustaffe (sixth) and Hayden Defoort (seventh in 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) rounded out the area placers for the boys in 2A. Jacklin Linnemeyer was third in the shot put and Lumberjack freshman Raevyn Yearout fifth in the 200 and fourth in the 200.

1A: At Middleton, Logos of Moscow won the girls team title, while Rockland claimed the boys title.
