PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland comes up short in season opener

FRENCHTOWN, Mont. — Sophomore Kiersten Drake hit a three-run home run with nobody out in the top of the seventh inning for Lakeland, but the comeback ended there as the Hawks fell to the Hamilton Broncs 6-4 in their season opener at Frenchtown High on Thursday.

After Drake's dinger, the next three Lakeland batters were retired. The Hawks struck out 13 times in the game.

Junior Alexis Hanna led off the game with a single and scored on a double by Delilah Zimmerman to give Lakeland a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Drake and Zimmerman each finished with two hits.

Lakeland plays Frenchtown today.

MOSCOW — The Inland Empire League doubleheader, scheduled for the Moscow School District Community Playfields, was postponed due to rain.

The games were a makeup of a doubleheader rained out on March 19.

No makeup date was announced.

Bonners Ferry 1-7

BONNERS FERRY — Sophomore Dallen Williams struck out six in the opener for the Bulldogs, who split a nonleague doubleheader with the Badgers at Bonners Ferry High.

Sandpoint (3-4) extended a 2-1 lead with three runs in the seventh inning, scoring on a pair of passed balls.

In the nightcap, senior Wyatt Smith singled to score Thomas Bateman with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Badgers rallied from a 6-0 deficit for the win.

“To be down in the second game, it really took a lot for our guys to come through,” Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin said. “It was a great game and we enjoy playing Sandpoint. It was nice to get that win.”

Bonners Ferry (4-9) travels to face Lincoln County, Mont., in a doubleheader on Saturday in Eureka.

Sandpoint returns to action on April 9 with a doubleheader against Lake City at Memorial Field.
