SALEM, Ore. — The North Idaho College men finished fifth out of 12 teams, and the Cardinal women were fourth out of nine, at the spring season-opening Willamette Cup which concluded Sunday at Creekside Golf Club.

NIC was the lone two-year school in the event.

Sophomores Josh McCartain and Jarett Giles tied for sixth for the NIC men, each shooting 144, five strokes back of the winner.

Sophomore Laila Jalil led the Cardinal women, finishing seventh overall at 155, 12 strokes back of the winner.

“Teams were rusty for sure, as we only had two practice days before competing this spring,” NIC men’s and women’s golf coach Russell Grove said. “But it was good to get out and compete.”

Lewis-Clark State’s men won the tournament by seven strokes over Whitworth. Luke West, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, finished tied for 16th for LC State with a 69-76—145.

George Fox of Newberg, Ore., won the women’s tournament by 51 strokes over Lewis-Clark State. Kyla Currie, a senior from Lake City High, finished tied for 10th for LC State with an 82-76—158.

Next up for NIC is an NWAC league tournament in Port Orchard, Wash., April 14-15.
