Avista asking customers to conserve natural gas

Avista is asking customers to conserve natural gas as a result of a mechanical issue occurring with a transmission natural gas provider for Avista. The pipeline supplier’s issue is affecting Avista’s ability to supply natural gas to its customers’ homes and businesses throughout its service territory.

It’s important to know that the company’s local gas system is safe and was not damaged by the third party’s equipment issue. Avista is doing all it can to maintain its natural gas system operations, and will provide updates as more information is available from the supplier.

Avista has already requested Idaho and Washington industrial natural gas customers to curtail usage. At this point, Avista is asking its residential customers to help conserve natural gas for the next 24 hours. Customers should set their thermostats at a lower setting and limit the use of hot water until further notice.

“Our gas transmission suppliers are working diligently to resolve this issue,” said Heather Rosentrater, Avista president and chief operating officer. “We recognize the hardship this request presents our customers given the extreme cold temperatures. We will provide more updates as the situation evolves. We are grateful for everyone’s patience and please know we are working around the clock to mitigate impact to our customers.”

Given the cold temperatures, customers needing additional support during this time are encouraged to call 211 or visit www.wa211.org or www.211.idaho.gov.
