KCSO warns of tax scam
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday warned residents of a new scam.
According to a press release, scammers are sending letters to people and claiming to be collection agents for Kootenai County, demanding immediate payment for overdue property taxes.
The letters threaten that if payment is not made promptly, the victim’s bank accounts and property will be seized. The letter includes a phone number to call.
"Please be advised that this number is not affiliated with Kootenai County or any federal agency and should not be called," the release said.
Anyone who receives such a letter and believes they owe property taxes should contact the Kootenai County Treasurer’s Office at 208-446-1005 to verify the status of their account. Residents can also use the "Property Tax Look-Up Tool" on the treasurer’s page at kcgov.us.
