PREP SOFTBALL: Lake City, Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston each sweep, remain tied for first in IEL

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Layla Gugino went 4 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored in the first game, and the host Lake City Timberwolves went on to sweep the Post Falls Trojans 10-5 and 7-3 in Inland Empire League softball Saturday at Lake City High.

Gugino hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for Lake City (10-4, 8-2 IEL).

Sophomore KaeLee Kolden went 4 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored in the first game for the Timberwolves, and finished 7 for 7 on the day.

Karsyn DeMent was 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the first game for Lake City, including a two-run single in the first inning that put the T-Wolves up 3-2.

In the second game, Maddy Blood took a shutout into the seventh inning for Lake City.

“KaeLee had a big day for us at the plate,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “She was locked in and ready to hit whatever was throw at her. Her at-bats were key in both wins. 

“Maddy was on today in the circle. She’s getting stronger each game she throws. She is new to our program, but has already proven to be a crucial addition to our team and battery.”

Katie Berg went 4 for 7 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored for Post Falls (4-13, 4-10).

With Lake City, Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston all sweeping on Saturday, the three teams remain tied for first in the IEL with 8-2 records.

On Thursday, Post Falls travels to Timberlake, and Lake City is home vs. Moscow in an IEL doubleheader.

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Leah Nordman pitched a one-hitter and drove in six runs in the second game, and the host Vikings went on to sweep the Bears in IEL play at Larry Schwenke Field.

Nordman struck out six and walked three in the nightcap for Coeur d’Alene (10-4, 8-2 IEL). The only hit she allowed was a leadoff single in the fourth. She was 3 for 3 in the nightcap, with a two-run double in the first inning, a two-run triple in the second and a two-run double in the third.

Chloe Burke drove in three runs in the second game for the Vikings, and Abby Linder was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Senior Abby Moehring went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored in the first game for Coeur d’Alene. Jenna Davenport earned the win in the circle with six innings of five-hit relief, striking out five and walking three.

Hannah Robertson went 3 for 4 with a solo homer, two RBIs and three runs scored in the first game for Moscow (5-9, 2-6).

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint on Wednesday in an IEL doubleheader.

LEWISTON — Peyton Cessna went a combined 3-for-6 with a single and two doubles for the visiting Bulldogs, who fell to the Bengals in an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Airport Park.

In the first game, Lewiston’s Jenna Barney had 17 strikeouts in the first game, and went 5 for 8 at the plate with seven RBIs on the day.

Sandpoint (3-13, 0-8 IEL) will travel to Moscow for a doubleheader on Monday.

Lewiston (8-6, 8-2) hosts Lakeland in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

ST. MARIES — Freshman Addilyn Turner went 7 for 9 on the day and scored twice for the Lumberjacks, who came up just short in the second game and were swept by the visiting Bulldogs in Central Idaho League play.

Turner was 4 for 4 in the first game for St. Maries (3-14, 2-7 CIL). Brenna Elliott was 4 for 4 in the second game for the Lumberjacks.

Mattie Thacker struck out 10 in the first game for Grangeville (8-7, 4-2). 

In the second game, St. Maries had the tying run at second base after Addyson Stewart’s two-run double with two out in the seventh, but the next batter flew out.

St. Maries travels to league-leading Orofino on Tuesday for a CIL doubleheader.
