PREP ROUNDUP: McGraw has big day in triple jump; Post Falls runs away with Finney title

| April 17, 2024 1:21 AM

TRACK AND FIELD

POST FALLS — For a third time in the triple jump, Coeur d’Alene sophomore Evey McGraw made a huge leap on Tuesday.

Not just winning the event with a mark of 37 feet, 2 inches, but in the school’s record books.

McGraw eclipsed the previous high of Hailey Haakenson of 36 feet, set in 2016 at the Christina Finney Coed Relays meet at Post Falls High.

“It was pretty cool for her,” Coeur d’Alene jumps coach Corey Comstock said. “She just started in the event three meets ago, and has improved a ton already. She’s a very competitive person and works hard. I showed her a few weeks ago that the school record was on her radar, and now the next thing would be to win a state title.”

Post Falls ran away with the team title, with boys and girls team scores combined, finishing with 308 points. Sandpoint was second with 242.5 and Coeur d’Alene third with 138.5.

“We looked at the forecast and it said partly sunny and weather in the 50s, but we got none of that stuff,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “After the sun went down, it got really cold. But the kids did a really good job of hanging in there and we made the best of a bad situation weather wise. There were some people out there setting personal bests, so I was really surprised.”
