NIC SOFTBALL: Cardinals bat around, sweep Spokane in NWAC twinbill

POST FALLS — Kennedy Hobson, Hayden Rockwell and Kaylee Vieira homered for North Idaho College in the opening game of a Northwest Athletic Conference sweep over the Community Colleges of Spokane at Post Falls High on Sunday.

“Kennedy was on fire today and had a great day at the plate,” NIC coach Shay Chapman said. “Her, Hayden, Kaylee and Emily Schulhauser had really great days at the plate.”

NIC won the opener 12-3, then defeated the Sasquatch 8-0 in the nightcap, improving to 21-2, 13-0 in conference play after winning a 15th straight game.

“We’ve just been focused on passing the bat and stringing good at-bats together,” Chapman said. “It’s nice to see that it hasn’t been just one person. We’re just really solid offensively, defensively and a well-rounded team.”

Kristine Schmidt, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, had six strikeouts in the first game for NIC, which extended a 5-3 advantage on a grand slam by Vieira in the fifth inning of the first game.

Hobson and Summer Makinster both homered in the second game for NIC, which hosts Yakima Valley at Memorial Field on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.

Alyssa Krause, a sophomore from Post Falls High, hit a solo home run in the fourth inning of the first game for the Community Colleges of Spokane (14-8, 9-7).

“Spokane’s a good team,” Chapman said. “We just played really well today.”
