Cadets can apply for fire department

| April 15, 2024 1:00 AM

COEUR d'ALENE — The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department is opening up recruitment for its 2024 fall semester high school Fire Cadet Program.

The program is intended to expose high school seniors to a career in the fire service. Cadets will have the chance to train alongside professionals, participate in hands-on drills, and get a firsthand look at what it takes to be part of the community's safety network. Each Fire Cadet is assigned to a fire station and placed under the direct supervision of a Fire Captain and crew.

Fire Cadets are required to spend at least five hours per week at their assigned fire station.

"This is the absolute minimum time; successful cadets spend much more time at the station," according to the program description.

There are requirements.

The applicant must be a high school senior the year that he or she is enrolled in the program, have a 2.5 GPA from the most recent quarter report card at the time of application, be on track to graduate high school in the expected time frame, have a good attendance record at school and be physically fit.

"The applicant must be able to demonstrate maturity to be considered for the program," the program description said.

Applications are due by May 16. Upon a successful application review, applicants who meet the qualifications will be invited to a physical fitness test. The minimum requirements are a 1-mile run in less than eight minutes and 30 seconds, 30 push-ups in a two-minute period and 309 sit-ups in a two-minute period.
