PREP ROUNDUP: Zimmerman delivers in opener as Lakeland splits with Moscow

RATHDRUM — Sophomore Delilah Zimmerman went 3 for 5 with a homer, and the Lakeland Hawks held on to beat the visiting Moscow Bears 7-5 in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader Thursday.

Zimmerman and Payton Sterling each hit two-run homers in a four-run first inning in the first game for Lakeland (2-5, 1-3 IEL), which led 7-0 heading into the top of the sixth.

In the second game, Megan Highfill hit two homers and drove in four runs for Moscow (6-7, 2-4), which went yard four times. Sterling homered for the Hawks.

Lakeland plays host to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., on Saturday.

POST FALLS — Freshman Kyndal Bridge went 7 for 9 with six RBIs and four runs scored as the visiting Vikings swept the Trojans in IEL play.

Bridge was 4 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (7-3, 5-1 IEL), and hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game.

Abbey Linder went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs in the first game for the Vikings, and Molly Nelson was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs. 

Kayla Rouse had two hits and drove in three runs in the first game for Post Falls (1-10, 1-7). Her two-run single sparked a five-run seventh.

Leah Nordman struck out 11 in the first game for Coeur d’Alene, and Jenna Davenport fanned eight in the nightcap.

Post Falls plays host to Sandpoint today at 3 in a doubleheader.

Coeur d’Alene is home vs. Lake City on Tuesday in a twinbill.

SPIRIT LAKE — Casey Whaley pitched a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, and Logan Walsh homered and drove in five runs for the host Tigers in the nonleague win over the Lumberjacks.

Whaley walked two, and hit a triple for Timberlake (6-6). Walsh hit a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third, finishing 3 for 4 with four runs scored. Acacia Pecor and Marissa Needs each had two hits for the Tigers.

“I’m proud of how we played today,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “All of my kids, one through nine, hit the ball hard today. Casey pitched a good game for us. It’s nice to see the run support for our pitchers.”

St. Maries travels to Priest River on Saturday for a doubleheader.

SANDPOINT — Grant Allaway took advantage of two straight walks with a two-run single in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the second game, but the Bulldogs countered with three runs in the bottom half to get a nonleague sweep at Memorial Field.

Cooper Lenz tripled and scored on a groundout in the sixth inning for Timberlake, which got its first hit on a leadoff single by Nate Beardsall in the third inning. Caden Robinett struck out five for the Tigers in the opener.

Timberlake (6-6-1) hosts St. Maries next Thursday.

Sandpoint (4-6) travels to Lakeland for a doubleheader next Thursday.

Landen Holmes hit a two-run double to score Peyton Lingo and Wyatt Holmes to give St. Maries a 7-4 lead in the seventh.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Vikings swept in boys singles, boys doubles and mixed doubles to top the Timberwolves.

Boys matches were scheduled for Lake City High, with girls matches at Coeur d’Alene High.

“I am so proud of the way our team played today,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said. “It was nice to see our mixed doubles play well and get a couple of wins for us.”

Both schools will host Moscow and Lewiston on Monday.
