LIBRARY BOOKS: Parents should know what kids are reading

“Story of sheriff and pilfered books needs new ending” as penned by Shawn Vestal, a Spokesman columnist on Oct. 4. First three paragraphs:

“It’s called stealing, sheriff.

When you take something that isn’t yours and don’t return it, that’s the word.

Even if it’s a book you don’t like.”

I strongly suggest you read his article. To date myself, in my early teens I got a hold of “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” and hid it under my mattress. I didn’t get very far in it and the book disappeared. Of course, I couldn’t ask my mom about it until around 50 years later. She denied stealing it from me. That’s when I found out my dear mother was capable of lying (or getting forgetful). It’s up to parents to know what their children are up to — check their phones, check their TV viewing, check under their mattress! And for heaven’s sake, TALK to them (even when it’s uncomfortable).
