LAUREL, Mont. — North Idaho College sophomore Josh McCartain shot an 11-under-par 205 (68-69-68) over 54 holes to earn men’s medalist honors by nine strokes at the Beartooth Invitational hosted by NAIA Rocky Mountain College, a two-day event which concluded Tuesday at Laurel Golf Club.
“He was just solid today,” NIC coach Russell Grove said. “I followed him the last 10 holes, and he just didn’t make any mistakes. He was hitting the ball well and played a really clean round.”
NIC sophomore Jarett Giles was second with a 72-71-71—214, helping the Cardinals win the team title by 14 strokes with an 8-under 856 (287-280-289)
“We’ve got some depth this year and got out to a slow start on the second 18 on Monday,” Grove said. “But the last 15 holes, we played really well and carried it over to Tuesday. The weather wasn’t as great, but the guys played solid. They felt like they left some shots out there and that’s something good to build on.”
Lewis-Clark State’s Kyla Currie, a senior from Lake City High, tied for second among the women with a 78-79-79—236.
Rocky Mountain’s Valentina Zuleta was women’s medalist with a 72-73-71—216, leading the Bears to the team title.
NIC continues the fall season with a tournament at Indian Summer Golf Course in Lacey, Wash., next Monday and Tuesday.
