NIC GOLF: Cardinal men, women, runner-up at spring opening Warrior invite

| March 22, 2023 1:10 AM

LEWISTON — North Idaho College freshman Josh McCartain shot a 218 over 54 holes to finish tied for sixth in the Lewis-Clark State Warrior Spring Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club.

NIC finished second with an 880 against NAIA programs and University of Lethbridge.

"I was proud of how the men battled and the effort they gave on every shot," NIC golf coach Russell Grove said. "I know it wasn't easy for them coming out of winter with us not being able to have outdoor practice yet due to weather in Coeur d'Alene. I'm certain after the last few days that once we're able to get a few weeks of practice under our belt, we will be right where we want to be for the remaining events."

Lewis-Clark State, led by medalist Jergen Viken with a 209, won the men’s team title with an 854.

"Lewis-Clark State is a solid NAIA program," Grove said. "But I'm confident if we had the opportunity to prepare correctly, we would have given them a run."

NIC sophomore Navy Wood shot a 166 to lead the Cardinal women to a runner-up finish with a team score of 695.

"What I saw out of the women was very promising," Grove said. "Given what we've had to work with, I know with a few weeks of prep before our next event, we will be ready to compete."

Kyla Currie, a junior from Lake City High, finished third with a 158, helping lead the Warriors to the women’s team title.

NIC returns to action at the Columbia Basin Spring Invitational April 16-17 in the Tri-Cities.
