SPOKANE — Gonzaga Prep scored the game-winner on a safety squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Coeur d'Alene 5-4 in a nonleague game Thursday.

Trailing by two runs, Coeur d’Alene tied the game at 4 in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Andrew Karns grounded to the shortstop, who threw home. Kyle Bridge beat the throw home and, when the throw squirted away from the catcher, Chase Saunders also scored.

Coeur d’Alene limited Gonzaga Prep to four hits. The Bullpups beat Lake City 10-6 on Wednesday in Spokane. Both games were originally scheduled to be played in Coeur d'Alene, but were moved to Prep due to field conditions.

“Our pitching tonight, like it’s been this season, was exceptional,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “And our pitchers did a good job from top to bottom tonight. We had some opportunities to score early, and the guys were pressing too hard and striking out.”

Gonzaga Prep pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.

“Right now, it’s good to learn from,” Karns said. “We need to continue to work on executing a plan and take it to Boise with us next weekend. We just need to do a better job in those spots.”

Jesse Brown and Cooper Erickson had two hits each for Coeur d’Alene (2-1), which hosts Mt. Spokane on Saturday in a single game at Ted Page Field starting at noon.
